While all the OSes bet on the app count in their respective markets, a new study released by StarDust on app details on iOS, Windows Phone, and Google Play platforms has revealed a striking finding that over 50 percent (more than 700,000) of the total apps available on these stores are dead apps and will possibly never receive an update. Earlier this month, it was found that a single developer was responsible for a third of all apps in BlackBerry’s App World.
According to the infographic, almost 70 percent of the total 156,317 Windows Phone apps can be considered as dead apps, while 65 percent of those on Apple’s App Store have never received an update and less than 10 reviews or notes each. It is not just Windows Phone and Apple’s market places, as even Google’s Play Store, with a total of 484,271 apps or 41 percent of such apps.
Apparently, the number on applications for each app store projected in the report is less than the figures claimed by the OS companies themselves, which could possibly be due to the exclusion of expired apps or for other reasons.
The infographic shows that 68 percent of available applications on Play Store fail to receive more than 5,000 downloads, however despite that 1,107 new apps are published on Play Store on daily basis. The infographic states that a total of 2,371 applications are published across platforms each day, with 978 on the App Store and 286 on the Windows Phone. However, even though the Android has the most number of new apps published in a day, Apple still manages to attract even more publishers to join its developer program and publish apps daily. Not surprisingly, iOS has the widest choice-range of applications, with the largest number of publishers – 90 new developers publish an app in a day.
On an average, iOS app gets 80 percent of reviews in the first 18 days of being published, while Android and Windows Phone apps receive first notes or reviews within 16 days and 13 days of their launch. Also, the Play Store receives the maximum number – 6 on an average – of updates for an app.
On monetary terms, Apple’s App Store accounts for 50 percent of the total revenue generated from paid apps, while Play Store sums up to 32 percent and Windows Store for 13 percent of the revenue.
The study is based on the details including the usage pattern, new or dead apps, publishers, monetization pattern and more seen on these top three app markets.
