The wait is finally getting over. Blackberry has announced that the BBM app for Android and iOS platforms will finally go live from September 21 and September 22 respectively. A couple of days back we predicted that BlackBerry will make the BBM app multiplatform in this week. The iconic messenger app will be available as a free download in the Google Play store and the App Store soon. Both the apps will have some BBM features missing that would remain exclusive to BlackBerry smartphones. Here are the details of the features that will be available on these platforms.
To begin with, as leaked in previous reports, a BBM user on any of the Android and the iOS platforms will be allowed to make personalized profile with their pictures, profile status and other information. The interesting bit is that the BBM messenger for these platforms will also come with a unique PIN, which is one of the popular identity-based features of the app that would not require users to share their phone number or email address to a new or casual contact.
The famous BBM Chat for both the platforms will allow users to make conversations across Android, iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones, attach and share files, photos, voice notes and other data on phone. The chat will show message status including delivery status, as well as show if the message has been read or if the person is replying to the message. It will support group chat, which will allow a user to invite up to 30 contacts to chat, share photos and schedules on the platform.
Then there also will be an option to broadcast a message which will send the message to all BBM contacts at once, just like what we have seen on other third party messenger apps like WhatsApp.
That is not it, the company has also stated that from later this year, the this-year-launched-feature BBM Channels will also be available for both Android and iOS. It will come with a forum for active and real conversations between users and other popular people and brands including celebrities, artists, service providers, communities and more as well. A user can then subscribe to a Channel to be a part of the conversations in it.
And as expected, the BBM Video calling and BBM Voice calling services won’t be available on Android and iPhones right now but might come as a part of a future update.
BBM for Android will be available as a free download for Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean (Android 4.x) versions from around 4:30 PM on September 21. BBM for iPhones running iOS 6 and iOS 7 will become available for each market on the App Store schedule of 12:01 AM local time on September 22.
