Google has been on an acquisition spree and now it has bought Bump, the start up behind file sharing app and the maker of Flock. Bump has been a noteworthy app as one it allows users to bump their phones to share files. Bump announced the acquisition via a blog post and also said that its app had been downloaded 125 million times.
Most probably, Google will integrate Bump into its services and add its bumping skills to Android, especially since Apple is upping the ante with file sharing on iOS 7 with the presence of a feature called Air Drop.
Of course, Air Drop has been available on Macs since OS X Lion, but now that it will be available on the iPad, the iPhone and the iPod Touch, it will gain massive user adoption. This will give Google the need to have a counteracting facility on its platform, and Bump provides for that opportunity.
The New York Times is reporting that Google paid in the region of $40 million for Bump, and this comes after Bump managed to raise $20 million from venture capital firms like Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.
Bump started of as a service that allowed users to share business cards, and then ventured into social networking, eventually turning to file sharing in a very unique manner.
