When one talks about open world games, then the first name that comes to mind is Grand Theft Auto or GTA as it is known lovingly. Rockstar studios essentially defined the genre when it released GTA III, twelve years ago on the PlayStation 2. With GTA V, Rockstar is not only trying to elevate GTA as the most important gaming franchise out there but it has made the most expensive, and ambitious video game of all time and that for the current generation of consoles, with the next generation consoles landing in November. As risky as this sounds, it appears the game is off to a flying start. At least that what most reviewers are saying!
IGN says that “Grand Theft Auto V is not only a preposterously enjoyable video game, but also an intelligent and sharp-tongued satire of contemporary America.”
Polygon says, “Rockstar has expanded and improved upon so much of what’s special about video games as mainstream spectacles, from the playful use of characters to the refined take on world design. The developer’s progress makes the aspects of the game left in cultural stasis — the poorly drawn women, the empty cynicism, the unnecessarily excessive cruelty — especially agitating.”
According to EuroGamer, “GTA5 may not be the Hollywood-beating crime story it wants to be, then, but it’s the best video game it’s ever been, and I’ll take that.”
The overall consensus seems to be that GTA V is the best game in the series. It is utterly violent and satirical about modern American culture. At the same time, it is also a supremely fun game to play, which represents incredible longevity with a single session lasting over 60 hours.
While the game is releasing on consoles that are on their last legs, GTA V according to the reviews will be the benchmark by which games for the next generation will be judged upon.
