For the last week or two there’s been a lot of buzz around BlackBerry’s imminent launch of BBM app for Android and iOS platforms. With the app set to release on September 21 for Android and on September 22 for iOS, phone companies are clamoring to pen deals allowing them to pre-load the messenger app on their devices. Moments ago, Micromax announced that it had signed a similar deal with BlackBerry.
As a part of the deal, all new Canvas smartphones from October onwards will come pre-loaded with the BBM app. Existing Canvas device owners in the meantime will be able to download the app for from the Google Play Store.
“Bringing one of the most popular mobile messaging services with BBM on our smartphones is yet another effort to expand our bouquet of messaging services for our consumers to connect and communicate seamlessly with their loved ones,” said Deepak Mehrotra, chief executive officer of Micromax.
With Micromax ranked second in the Indian smartphone market behind Samsung, it seems like a good platform for BlackBerry to launch the Android-variant of its messenger app in the Indian market. But with other apps likeWhatsApp boasting over 20 million monthly active users in India, it will be interesting to see how BlackBerry’s messenger fares.
