Apple’s ‘last compatible version’ feature lets you download iOS apps on older devices

Finally after what seems to have been a long wait, Apple is going to release iOS 7 to the masses tomorrow. But a new and completely overhauled OS doesn’t mean that it has forgotten about the older versions. The Cupertino-based company is reportedly readying a new feature that lets one download newer iOS apps on older hardware.

A user on Reddit (spotted by Engadgetposted the above screenshot. The user was trying to download an app that wasn’t compatible with his device’s firmware. But instead of giving a compatibility error, iTunes asked him if he would like to install an older version of the app instead. The folks at Engadget gave this feature a shot and were able to successfully install an older version of Instagram on an iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.3.3.
This should come as welcome news to those of us who still own an ancient Apple device. There is still some life left in Apple’s legacy devices after all. If you’ve tried this feature out, do let us know how it worked out for you in the comment section below.
