When the new Windows 8.1 was unveiled at the Build conference back in July, Microsoft had promised that hardware manufacturers would get the final release of the OS by the end of August. Right on cue, the Redmond-based company has released Windows 8.1 RTM (Release To Manufacturers).
“Unlike past RTM moments, this milestone represents progress in Microsoft’s new rapid release cycle and optimizes the overall customer experience, while highlighting the handoff to OEM partners and wide array of devices expected this fall,” Microsoft said in a statement.
Remember this is not the version you will get on your computers and is only meant for OEMs to build new devices around the latest OS. The final release for consumers is still slated for October 17. On release, the update will be available to Windows 8 and Windows RT users as a free download via the Windows store. Alternatively, it will also be available at retail stores and on new devices starting on that date in the market.
