Last week it was reported that Nokia had a prototype Android phone, and now the Verge is reporting that even Microsoft had Surface Phone prototypes in the works. Reportedly, the project was secretly under the charge of Terry Myerson who is now the head for Windows. It was Microsoft’s backup plan if Nokia failed to sell a lot of Windows Phones.
The plan ‘B’ was put in place as HTC had unsuccessfully tried to sell Windows Phones and Samsung had not attempted a wholehearted product that would be exclusively made for the Windows Phone software stack.
Microsoft was worried if Nokia switched or tanked, then its operating system would lose out and not attain any sort of adoption. Nokia commands 80 percent of Windows Phone hardware and has helped Microsoft optimize the operating system for low cost smartphones.
