Opera has unveiled a completely new web browser built for tablets, especially iPads, called Coast. This new browser takes into account how one uses a tablet and the result is a browser that offers an app-based experience.
When you fire up the app, instead of the usual homescreen with navigation bars, you will see your favorite websites listed like the apps you see on iOS. There are no other buttons on the UI except for a ‘Home’ button at the bottom and a button on the right corner which pops up recently visited websites. Additionally, the browser also has a built-in search bar (powered by Google) and Opera has also programmed Coast to automatically suggest three results as you type.
All the interactions on the browser are gesture-based so swiping right or left will take you from one open tab to another. Opera has also built-in a strong security system and the browser pops-up a warning message the moment you click on a link to a potentially dangerous site.
You can head over to the App Store to download Coast. In the meantime, you can watch a commercial for the browser as well as watch Huib Kleinhout, the head of the Coast project at Opera, talking about this project, in the embedded videos below.
