Tomorrow Samsung is scheduled to launch the Galaxy Note III in India, which is expected to cost around Rs 47,990, but now PTI is reporting Samsung is also planning to launch two budget handsets below Rs 15,000 in India.
Samsung dominates India’s smartphone market with 26 percent market share. But, the company of late has been facing stiff competition from Local Indian OEMs like Micromax, Karbonn, Xolo and Celkon mobile, who have shown the ability to produce Android powered smartphones that compete with Samsung’s hardware and software at a fraction of the cost.
The sweet spot and maximum growth in the Indian market has been coming in Rs 5,000 – Rs 15,000 price band, and devices like the Nokia Lumia 520 and the Micromax Canvas 2 and Canvas HD have proven to be popular. While, Samsung has products in this price band, they don’t compete well with the aforementioned devices in terms of a user experience.
Samsung also plans on preloading these devices with support for Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Gujarati, which it had announced last month. Additionally, Samsung notes that now the game has shifted towards providing large screen experiences without necessarily making the screen size large, and that’s something it has been doing with its higher-end devices, but local Indian OEMs are doing the same at a much lower price point.
