USB On The Go (USB OTG) is not a new feature in smartphones and smartphones. One of Nokia’s N-series smartphone offered this feature a couple of years ago and most low-cost Android tablets too offer it to let users connect USB modems for 3G connectivity or USB pen drives for extra storage. Lenovo’s P780 Android smartphone too offers USB OTG but with a twist.
The P780 has a massive 4,000mAh battery, which is unheard of in a smartphone that too priced under Rs 20,000. And to make the most of it, Lenovo lets users share its battery with other smartphones! The phone comes with a USB OTG cable in the box and one can use it and the phone’s USB charging cable to connect it with other smartphones to charge them.
We haven’t tested it thoroughly to see how much longer it takes to charge a phone or how many times over it can charge any smartphone, but we have tried it on a series of Android smartphone and even the iPhone 5 and can confirm it works. While it is still early days in our review process for us to recommend this phone, it has already started on the right note.
“It is like you are carrying a smartphone and a battery bank in one single device,” says Anuj Sharma, head – smartphone marketing, Lenovo. The P780 features a 5-inch 720p display, a MediaTek quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera and runs on Android 4.2.1.
