Intel has detailed its next generation Bay Trail mobile CPU at IDF. It is based on its new Silvermount architecture and according to Intel, the new Atom Z3000 delivers twice the CPU performance of the current CloverTrail chipset and has three times the graphical chops. Intel says that the implements come via the new 22nm manufacturing process thanks to its 3D transistor trigate technology that was first seen on the Ivy Bridge CPU.
Bay Trail has been designed from the ground up keeping tablets in mind. It will be offered in dual-core and quad-core versions and will support directX 11, OpenGL ES 3.0, HDMI 1.4, DP 1.2, eDP 1.3 and displays with up to 2560x1600p resolution. According to Intel one can expect Bay Trail powered tablets in the fourth quarter of the year from OEMs like Acer, Lenovo, Asus and Toshiba.
One can also expect Bay Trail powered Android tablets that will cost as low as $199. Bay Trail will also power Windows 8 tablets and hybrids and Intel’s supports 64-bit x86 architecture.
Intel is also talking up its Burst Technology 2.0 which enables asynchronous CPU core operations. This technology helps Intel to scale up the CPU performance dynamically and this is also responsible for the claimed 10 hour battery life. Intel says that Bay Trail will support screen sizes of 7-11.6-inches and the devices will be as thin as 8mm and will weigh about a pound.
