Qualcomm’s Halo Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging tech to be used in FIA’s Formula E safety cars

Qualcomm’s Halo Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) technology will be adapted to be fitted into the 2014/2015 FIA Formula E Championship safety cars so they can be wirelessly charged and the very same technology will be outfitted in the race cars from season two onwards. The technology in play uses resonant magnetic induction to transfer energy between a ground-based pad and a charging pad on the electric vehicle. The driver just has to park the vehicle over the pad to commence the charging process.
Qualcomm has also announced that it has become a founding technology partner for FIA’s Formula E championship, which is the new racing championship that will be powered by cars running exclusively on electric energy. The company has announced a multiyear deal with Formula E holdings and Qualcomm will showcase its Halo technology which will help reduce the impact of automotive racing on the environment.
Additionally, Qualcomm will evaluate the connectivity and mobile technology of each of the ten venue cities around the world and it will provide solutions that will enhance the viewing experience for spectators and will provide facilities like live streaming, video gaming and social media.
