Be it the first ever affordable Apple iPhone or Nokia’s very first Windows Phone 8 phablet, September this year is going to be huge in terms of the most-awaited smartphone launches from almost all of the top tier mobile device brands. While some of these launches have already been assured by their respective companies and some are awaiting the IFA trade show to open, the rest are simply buzzing in strong speculations. And while we would be keeping a close eye on all these launches, we have compiled a list of all the smartphones as well as phablets that are expected to be unwrapped this September.
Samsung Galaxy Note 3:
Samsung might have succeeded in keeping the third generation model of the Samsung Galaxy Note phablet discreet, but despite that enough has been disclosed in leaked images of its prototype and specs for us to get an idea about the hardware of the device. The Galaxy Note III is believed to be the biggest in the Galaxy Note series, and will either come with a 5.9-inch display of a 5.68-inch one with 1080p resolution. The impressive part is that its AMOLED display will be surrounded by merely 2.2mm thin side bezel.
Hardware-wise, the phablet will also pack the powerful 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor or a 1.8GHz octa-core Exynos 5 chipset with 3GB of RAM and will be available in three variants with 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of internal storage depending on individual markets. On the software front, though uncertain, the Note III will run the latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean straight out-of-the-box, along with a number of improvements in the additional software enhancements including in-built apps and smart features.
Additionally, it will sport a 13-megapixel primary camera with OIS, and is also rumored to support up to 4K video recording. Keeping up with the current trend, the phablet is also expected to be dust and water resistant. Samsung has already confirmed that the Galaxy Note III will be unveiled on its ‘unpacked’ event on September 4, alongside the new Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
Sony Xperia Z1 aka Honami:
The back surely seems to be the new front in the smartphone segment, as most of the smartphone vendors havestarted putting their focus on the camera and related features in their respective phone offerings. And having said that, the Xperia Z1 aka Honami surely is one of the Sony’s most buzz making camera-focused devices, which will also be unveiled on the September 4 along with Samsung’s latest offerings.
The Xperia Z1 will sport a Cyber-shot branded 20-megapixel rear snapper with Carl Zeiss optics and a Sony G lens as have been seen on the company’s point and shoot cameras. In addition to this will be Sony’s BIONZ image processing engine. Moreover, it is also rumored to feature a Nokia CityLens-like app.
The Sony Honami was expected to be the first smartphone to shoot video at 4K resolution however, with Acer stealing its thunder with the Liquid S2 phablet. Like the Xperia Z and Xperia Z Ultra, the Xperia Z1 will also be dust and water resistant.
Besides the camera, the Xperia Z1 is expected to come with a 5-inch 1080p display with Sony’s Triluminus display technology, and a metal frame. It will run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU clocked at 2.2GHz with 2GB of RAM. For those awaiting the phone in India, we had exclusively reported that Sony will launch the phone in India on September 18 for close to Rs 50,000.
Apple iPhone 5S:
The biggest smartphone launch of the year is also scheduled for September. While the iPhone 5S is expected to retain the same design and footprint as the iPhone 5, it is expected to be much more powerful than its predecessor.
The iPhone 5S is most likely feature the 64-bit version of the A7 chip which is speculated to run 31 percent faster than the A6 ensuring a snappy performance. Additionally, it will come with an improved microphone, an embedded fingerprint scanner, a 13-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash with f/2.0 aperture, a larger battery, and a couple of colors including a Champagne Gold variant. Besides these, the phone is also expected to come with a massive 128GB of storage capacity. Though there might be alterations in the specifications, these will be assured on September 10, when the phone is expected to launch.
Apple iPhone 5C:
This is the most anticipated iPhone from Apple, considering that it will be in reach of those price conscious buyers who always wished to use an iPhone but were restricted to buy one due to budget constraints. With this phone, Apple will bring back its plastic chassis in fashion.The iPhone 5C will sport a 4.0-inch display with 1136×640 pixel resolution and run on the latest iOS 7, just like all other iPhones though it might lack support for Siri, and an 8-megapixel rear camera. The phone is expected to be priced around $400 and $500. The iPhone 5C is expected to be launched in five color options – Red, Yellow, Green, Blue and White.
Nokia Bandit:
The Bandit or the Lumia 1520 could be Nokia’s first ever Windows Phone powered phablet with a 6-inch 1080p display. In terms of the design, this phablet will don a polycarbonate plastic-based design pattern similar to that seen on other Nokia’s many other Lumia models.
It is also expected to be the first device to run on Windows Phone 8.1 with GDR3 which brings support for 1080p displays, and is likely to pack in a quad-core Snapdragon CPU to ensure a smooth performance. If rumors are to be believed, Nokia is likely to bring its PureView magic to this phablet as well and will use a 20-megapixel PureView camera.
Nokia is expected to unveil the Bandit on September 26, alongside its rumored Windows RT tablet named Sirius.
