Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams
The US Open women's
final was set to see
World No1 Serena Williams
take on World No2 Victoria Azarenka as both women
sought a second Grand
Slam title this year.
The American clearly had
the momentum as she had
not dropped a set till this
match and was the player in
form. But the Belarusian not to
be left behind had won the
Australian Open earlier in the
year which is also a hard
court tournament.
On Sunday night, Serena
Williams overcame a second
set assault from Victoria Azarenka
to win 7-5, 6-7 (6/8), 6-1.
The US Open title on Sunday
was the 31-year-old's fifth US
Open crown and 17th Grand
Slam singles title.
The 31-year-old who is just days short of her 32nd birthday also became the oldest woman to
win the US Open since tennis turned professional 45 years ago.
Australian Margaret Court, who was 31 years and 55 days when she won the title in 1973 held
the oldest woman crown before Williams.
Azarenka put up a fight but was unable to stop the French Open champion from winning a
second Grand Slam. The 24-year-old as she collected her runners-up trophy for the second
time at Flushing Meadows paid rich tribute to calling her a 'great' of tennis.
Serena has won the same number of Grand Slams now as men's record holder Roger Federer.
Only Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Margaret Court have more Grand Slams.
The American World No1 was watched as she won her home Grand Slam by former US
President Bill Clinton, Hollywood stars like Hugh Jackman, Eva Longoria, singer Ricky Martin,
former tennis star Boris Becker and model Miranda Kerr to name a few famous people in the stands.
