A couple of weeks back, we reported about how Nokia’s HERE division had developed a Connected Driving Solution for carmakers to integrate its maps and navigation services into a car’s systems. Now, HERE has teamed up with Mercedes-Benz to work on the German carmaker’s self-driving cars project.
This partnership will see HERE collating and providing extensive route data that includes terrain, number of lanes, direction and precise location of traffic lights. This data will ensure autonomous cars have enough data to drive from Point A to Point B. The first route to get the metadata treatment will be from Mannheim to Pforzheim in Germany, which happens to be the one that the first Benz Patent-Motorwagen took, 125 years ago.
According to Nokia, though many services these days offer services like turn-by-turn navigation and speed limits, they are not enough for autonomous cars. “While autonomous vehicles may not hit the streets commercially for several years, automakers and tech innovators alike must already think about the infrastructure and technological requirements needed to support this technology,” Nokia said in a statement.
In addition to partnering with Mercedes, Nokia HERE has also struck a deal with Continental Corporation and Magneti Marelli, wherein both the companies will include HERE’s suite of maps and Connected Driving Solution into car systems.
